Instructional Design... What Does It Means?

Instructional design is the functional process of learning. Learning is how a person takes knowledge and hopefully retain the information. With the instructional designer they present the information in an easily attainable format using different methods that allows the learner to consume the knowledge easier.

Instructional design found me, I wasn't seeking it. I was in the process of wanting to get into the tech industry as an engineer or developer. That was until I was approached by a close friend in a bind, they were a new educator that had to use Canvas Infrastructure and was trying to learn tips via YouTube video by a creator named Ashlee Espinosa. I offered to help and I consumed myself with the program, the videos she offered and it was history from then. Since then I've worked with high school and university professors creating courses with the knowledge they provide as the subject matter experts.

Within my current course IDT-602 I have learn much more of the foundation of Instructional Design and the methodologies that made the industry into this ever-changing and growing career field. The psychologist Ricard Mayer has performed research on for decades covers the design principles that can be presented in all aspects of a classroom. My assumption of the reasoning is because technology is always a benefit to education and learning but it isn't a necessary tool. Mayer's principles equip a designer with the three metaphors of learning. Response strengthening, information acquisition, and knowledge construction(Mayer, 2017) . The goal is to obtain knowledge construction which mean the learner is building a sense of cognitive representation, that has a high chance of retention.

Michael Moore expressing that there is only 3 forms of learning interactions(Moore, 2015). The first would be the interaction with the content and the learner. This would include reading a book or an academic journal article. Next would consist learner-instructor interaction which is the second interaction which would be most individuals first thoughts when a person describes an educational transaction. Lastly the learner-learner interaction, this interaction can the most valuable form of education in modern society. The process benefits both learners, the person in the role of the educator is retaining the information on. higher level because they are capable to take the information and deliver to a peer or peers. The person receiving the knowledge is able to thoroughly in a digestible and understanding. Moore's philosophy on the multiple interaction of eLearning and distance education is that the ability of implementing all interactions to impact the retention.

After the current research and knowledge, gained by the theorist I have thus proven and surpassed my initial viewpoints on instructional design. The industry is far beyond an interaction and forever changing like me. As I develop in a stronger instructional designer I will update this blog with my future discoveries.

To be continued.
